Understanding Trichotillomania - A journey to healing

Understanding Trichotillomania - A journey to healing

23 March 2025

I've been delighted to see the signs of spring coming recently, the moments of warmth, sunshine and new growth. Spring marks a time of new beginnings and for client I've been working with recently we have achieved a very spring like new beginning. Today, I want to shine a light on a condition that affects many individuals but is often misunderstood: Trichotillomania (TTM). I recently had the privilege of working with a client who bravely faced this challenge, and I’d like to share her inspiring journey, the methods we used, and the positive results she achieved.

What is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania is a mental health condition classified as a body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB). It involves compulsively pulling out one’s hair, leading to noticeable hair loss and emotional distress. Individuals with TTM often pull hair from their scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, and it can be a way to cope with anxiety, stress, or trauma. Understanding the underlying causes and triggers is essential for effective treatment.

My Approach to Supporting Clients with TTM

When my client first reached out to me, she had been struggling with TTM for over a decade. Initially skeptical about hypnotherapy, she was open to exploring new techniques to regain control over her urges. Here’s how we approached her healing journey:

1. Hypnotherapy: We began with hypnotherapy sessions to explore the subconscious mind. This allowed her to uncover past events that influenced her present behavior. By recognizing how she had survived traumatic experiences, she learned that she possessed inner strength and resilience that she hadn't acknowledged before.

2. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT): Alongside hypnotherapy, we incorporated EFT, also known as tapping. This technique provided her with a practical tool to manage her anxiety and urges between sessions. EFT focuses on tapping specific meridian points on the body while addressing emotional issues, helping to release pent-up energy and promote emotional healing.

3. Counselling: Our sessions also included counselling, where we discussed her feelings and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. This aspect of therapy helped her develop a deeper understanding of her emotions and behaviors, fostering self-compassion and acceptance.

Positive Results and Transformation

The journey was not without its challenges, but the transformation my client experienced was remarkable. After a few sessions, she reported feeling more relaxed and open to the process. She learned tools to control her urges and manage anxiety, ultimately reversing a habit that had dominated her life for far too long.

Here’s what my client had to say about her experience:

"I reached out to Jodie after struggling with trichotillomania for over a decade. I was sceptical about hypnotherapy but after a couple of sessions I felt like I was able to relax and enjoy it. Jodie taught me tools to control my urges, manage my anxiety, and work on reversing a habit that I have had for a long time. Moving forward, I feel like I have a more positive outlook on life, and I am learning to love myself again. As a result, the trichotillomania finally feels like something I can control. Thank you, Jodie!"
